The New England First Amendment Institute will be held October 18 through 20 in Dedham, MA. This annual three-day investigative journalism workshop is provided to 25 New England journalists at no cost and features an All-Star faculty of reporters, editors, attorneys and media experts. Joining us this year is Pulitzer Prize winners Jennifer Berry Hawes of The Post and Courier, Joe Mahr of the Chicago Tribune and Carol Marbin Miller of the Miami Herald. Bill Buzenberg, former executive director of the Center for Public Integrity, Emily Shaw of the Sunlight Foundation and Anna Schecter of NBC will also be speaking, along with many others.
Fellows will learn about state and federal freedom of information laws, how to access and use SEC documents, database reporting, Internet and social media research, source development, writing strategies, investigative techniques, and accuracy and responsibility in reporting, among other topics.
